Why I Picked The Book?
Reading books is my hobby and passion both. I am a thriller and horror genre lover. Also I love to read Indian classic authors. Only because of this reason started reading R K Narayan. However, “An Astrologer’s Day”is a thriller story of an astrologer and a stranger with an interesting twist and mind blowing plot. At first, I did not thought it to be a thriller but slowly it took pace with an awesome twist.
From Where I Bought this Book?
I bought the book from Flipkart, an online shopping platform. You would not find this book in a second hand book market or local book stalls.
An Astrologer’s Day is a short story written by R K Narayan which was published in 1947. He is a leading Indian author and also founder of Indian Thought Publications. His many works include Swami and his friends, Malgudi Days, The Guide and The Bachelor of Arts. This story is a part of Malgudi Days.
The story encompasses an astrologer’s daily professional life. But he is not a real one instead a fake who with a simple change in his appearance has been able to fool people with his predictions. However, things start to change when a stranger enters his life who is related to his past. The stranger approaches the astrologer and starts asking some questions about his own life. The stranger was in search of a man. So, he wanted the astrologer to tell the whereabouts of the man.
But the astrologer was adamant that he would not answer any of his questions as it was closing time and tried every possible way to evade him. Who was the stranger and whom he was searching? And, why the astrologer was evading him in spite of being offered a good sum of money? Do they know each other?
The story revolves around two characters only, THE ASTROLOGER and THE STRANGER. The portrayal of the characters is very descriptive as the writer has taken utmost care in defining their appearances.
I have always been a fan of mystery stories. So, “An Astrologer’s Day” also fascinated me, especially, the secret which is revealed in the end. You can, certainly, classify this story as a story of betrayal and vengeance. I loved the last part of the story where the ultimate truth is revealed. The writer has maintained the thrill in the story up to the end. I will strongly recommend this story for thriller lovers and also if you are a fan of R K Narayan’s stories.
R K Narayan was one of those eloquent writers whose characters speak for themselves. Also, their characterization is performed in such a way that you would easily feel connected to them. Certainly, the writer has very beautifully defined the protagonist, the astrologer and other characters. The choice of words is very good probably adding more to our vocabulary. If you ask me to define the author’s writing style in short, I would say ” Creative and Descriptive”.
