Blurb

What happens when a love story takes a bitter ending? Sad, isn’t it?   Raman, the painter of signs by profession and a bachelor living with his aunt on Ellaman Street. His daily routine starts from visiting potential customers, demanding pending payments for his work and painting signboards in his workshop shed.   Then, Daisy enters his life who is working as a medical consultant for birth control measures. Raman was enthralled by his bewitching beauty but was not able to confess his love. He always feared that Daisy might not accept him.

Raman, finally, got a chance to be with Daisy when she invited him on a tour of villages for promoting birth control measures. Raman tried to approach her for expressing his love but his efforts go in vain. She threatened him that she would complain to police if this happens again she would complain to police.   Back to the village, Raman realized that Daisy would never accept him and he should mend his own ways. But fate has something different in store for him.   Will Daisy come back and accept Raman’s love? Will this be a happy ending? Read the story and find out.

My Opinion

The Painter of Signs, indeed, is a beautiful story filled with lots of romantic emotions. The writer has given a beautiful description of all the characters in a way that you can easily relate to them. But, the writer has portrayed Daisy in a mysterious character whose past remains hidden until she decides to reveal it.   But you will not be able to guess the ending till the last page of the book. It was a little bit shocking for me too. At first, I really didn’t expected it to be a love story. But, eventually the story turned out to be filled with emotions and disappointments.   I strongly recommend this book and you should not miss reading it if you are a fan of Indian authors and love story.

Narrative Style

R K Narayan was one of those eloquent writers whose characters speak for themselves. The characters of The Painter of Signs is performed in such a way that you would easily feel connected to them. The writer has very beautifully defined Raman, Daisy and Raman’s aunt. The choice of words is very good probably adding more to our vocabulary. If you ask me to define the author’s writing style in short, I would say ” Creative and Descriptive”.
